The “humble” hamburger has its origins in the original Hamburg Steak. This was a mix of shredded low-grade beef and local seasoning, hailing from Hamburg, Germany.

Supposedly it was first sold and eaten in the 18th century. Several centuries later, it traveled to the United States and is now the unofficial national food of America.
