5 Tips For First-Time Hot Tub Owners
Did you just purchase a new hot tub? Or, perhaps you moved into a home with an existing hot tub. Either way, you might be wondering just what to do next.

#1: Get Cozy with your Hot Tub
You want to get to know your hot tub – this means reading instruction manuals, talking to your dealer, and looking over your spa.
Make note of where all the controls are. Learn what each one does.
Are you familiar with your hot tub model? If you purchased it, you probably are. But, if you moved into a home with a hot tub, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with your hot tub model and its features.
You also want to know your hot tub’s serial number. In addition to the model, your dealer will need this to provide service.
#2: Circulate the Water
When it comes to circulating your water, it’s important to remember that the more you run your hot tub, the cleaner it will be.
Hot tub water is standing warm water. If it’s not moving, it’s standing still.
If your water is stagnating, and not moving, you are providing a ready environment and breeding ground for bacteria. So, to keep algae out of your water, keep your water circulating.
Water circulation also helps distribute your sanitizing products and keep your water balanced.
Check your manual to see if your hot tub has a built-in schedule.
#3: Clean the Inside and Outside
You don’t want to soak in dirty water, so you probably know how important it is to keep your hot tub clean.
Not only do you want to keep the water clean, but you want to ensure your shell (the outer part of your spa) is clean and that your filters are clean.
You’ll want to drain and clean your hot tub about every three-four months for average use. If you use your spa a lot, you might want to clean it more often.
Check for waterline scum and debris often, and make sure you keep it clean. You don’t want buildup on your seats.
When it comes to your cartridge filters, you can choose one of three methods. You can rinse, spray and/or soak. Check out our article and video on how to do this.
Finally, don’t forget to spray the outside of your hot tub to keep it clean, too. Banish dust and spider webs, and keep the area clear of leaves.
#4: Manage Your Hot Tub Chemistry
Hot tub chemistry is like swimming pool chemistry except you’re managing a smaller body of water, and it’s hot.
You need to manage the same chemicals – pH, alkalinity and sanitizer. Check with us, and we can help you decide on a sanitation system for your hot tub.
