It’s always a good idea to check your skimmer baskets after a big storm, even if it’s in the middle of the summer! The skimmer baskets are used to collect debris from entering your plumbing, but you do need to keep them clean and clear for proper water flow and circulation.

Check Your Pool Skimmers After a Storm

List of Things to Do After a Storm

There are several things you want to attend to when you’ve had a big storm:

  1. Skim leaves and debris that are floating in your pool.
  2. As we mentioned, clean out your skimmer baskets. Also, clean out your pump baskets.
  3. Check all of your electrical equipment.
  4. If all is okay, turn the power back on.
  5. Clean and backwash your pool.
  6. Check your water level. If it’s too high, remove some of the excess water.
  7. Vacuum and brush the walls and floor of your swimming pool.
  8. Shock and balance your pool. Most importantly, you want to measure your pH, calcium hardness, and total alkalinity.
  9. Run your filtration systems and circulate your pool.
