Pool Care – Is It Mustard Algae or Sand?

David covers the topic of pool care and answers the question, “Is It Mustard Algae or Sand,” in this week’s video, so you’ll never have to wonder again!

What Exactly is Mustard Algae?

Now that you know the difference between sand and mustard algae, let’s look at what this nasty thing is.

Mustard algae is a form of green algae. It is resistant to chlorine, and it often looks like dirt or sand on the bottom of your pool and even on the sides of your pool.

This type of algae contains compounds that act as a defense mechanism against the oxidation efforts of sanitizers. This means that it can survive even in highly chlorinated swimming pools.

You’ll find that this can also create a large chlorine demand when situations are just right.

The good news is you can brush mustard algae away quickly. The bad news is it returns quickly.

How Do You Kill It?

First, you want to bring us a water sample so we can test it for you (for free!).

To kill mustard algae, you want to use a product like BioGuard’s Algae Complete, as it kills all types of swimming pool algae.

How Do You Prevent It?

To prevent any type of algae growth, follow these five steps:

  • Maintain a sanitizer residual in your pool of 1-3 ppm.
  • Do an initial application of a preventative algicide and then apply it weekly during the swim season.
  • Routinely shock your swimming pool.
  • Make sure that your pool has the proper circulation and filtration.
  • Brush your swimming pool floor and walls regularly.
